Exploring some new terrain on a very familiar mountain.
There are a few lines in the Waterfalls Canyon area that I am interested in skiing. We scoped a few lines on Ranger Peak , and Eagles Rest as we ascended the Canyon. We decided to explore new terrain up the South Fork of Waterfalls Canyon towards the North Couloir on Eagles Rest Peak.
The South Fork is a mellow ascent with great views of the south facing lines on Ranger Peak.
I was really looking forward to the view south from the top of the Couloir, but it was cloudy. We really got to see some of the potential in the area. Can’t wait to get back.
I spotted this stunning couloir from the top of 10686 near Waterfalls Canyon a few years ago. Jon and I decided to give it a shot yesterday. We crossed Jackson Lake and headed up Waterfalls Canyon to the base of the Couloir.
The snow was variable on the way up with a shallow wind slab giving us the most concern. Not enough to turn us around, we continued to the top.
The top of the Couloir was a pretty wild spot. We were at a small notch along a long northern ridge of Eagles Rest Peak. The wind was strong while being funneled through the notch. Clouds, sun, wind and snow were swirling around us.
The Couloir was variable skiing in a stunning location.
Another fine wilderness adventure to a seldom skied Couloir. I would like to petition the court of first descents for the line to be called the “Black Hole Sun Couloir”, because I am a Soundgarden fan.
Phil and I skied a long, stunning couloir on the north side of Prospectors Peak last week. I couldn’t take my eyes of the Peak across the canyon. It was Peak 11094, never heard of it, or of anyone skiing it. It was a balmy 6 deg on the approach up Death Canyon to the Patrol Cabin.
We approached the 11094 by skinning up a mellow drainage and bowl to the east of the south face that led into No Wood Basin. There were great views of the south side of Buck Mt.
We skied down the upper face, then were funneled into the large, rolling, rocky terrain down the east side.
Full day required for this Couloir. Left the trailhead in the dark, got back in the dark.
This is a short movie from this season so far. The season started with rain down low for weeks, with heavy maritime snow up high. It’s just been getting better and better with more snow down low and some blower pow days. This footage is all from Grand Teton National Park. All human powered. Enjoy!
