STORM WEEK LAST OF THE GOODS

Kyle and I gearing up in the Swagger Wagon

This trip report is a “best of” from the last week of April into May. Kyle came down from Bozeman and we were ready to ski some big Teton Peaks with sunny weather. This was not the case. We had great weather on our Thor Peak descent, then it started snowing when we got back that evening. We were planning a rest day coming off of three long days in Leigh canyon. This again was not the case. We let it “pile up” a bit and went up Glory at 3 p.m. This began our storm week in the Tetons, and we didn’t see the sun for the next 6 days. I’ve never skied such a long storm cycle so late in the year. Here is the photo heavy documentation.

9:31 eastern. orange, green and white fly- Narragansett. decent pics admin.. no offense but i get real disappointed with teton “powder” shots because the tetons dont get very good powder. the whole teton mountain range is wind affected. check out the wasatch? there’s powder there and if not incredible spring skiing. diggities. checkpoint alpha, beta gamma 10:00 over

  2. admin says:

Disappointed? Bear in mind your small amount of time skiing powder in the Tetons. ie January, driest month of the winter. Tetons have some of the driest deepest powder skiing on earth, hands down. The dry cold atmosphere here produces some cold smoke like no other. The Wastach produces the cold smoke too, and lots of it. Been there done that, I’ve checked it out, the whole SLC metro area has checked it out. Wind affected? Every high alpine area from California to Maine is wind affected. Thats how you know your in the mountains. Tetons have plenty of lower elevation sheltered deep powder skiing as does the Wasatch, and every other mountain range in the West.

10:00 eastern. green, white and orange fly- Narragansett. thanx 4 the response admin. only skied the tetons in month of jan.? dont fotget october old boy? obviously your outlook on powder is non negotiable admin. so i am forced to examine photos of “powder skiing” lacking submerged subjects, oh well. just let it be known that a chicken parm dinner includes “gravy” or marinara, breaded chicken filets, mozzerella cheese and pasta? “been there, done that” admin.? ever skiied coalpit? the hypodermic needle? dromedory? mineral fork? pfieferhorn’s nw couli, cold fusion couli on Timp.? dont forget who youre responding to admin.? i have skiied most of those lines not to mention almost every single line you’ve skiied there and yet i still wouldnt say “been there done that” but anyway. stay safe admin.. checkpoint alpha, beta, gamma 10:00 over

  4. admin says:

You’re right, I shouldn’t use those terms “been there done that”. I didn’t ski the backcountry when I lived in Utah. I’ll ski those lines someday, maybe you can come out of retirement to share them with me. Powder skiing does not always involve submersion. It can be 4 inches or 4 feet.

  5. nuge says:

14:00 eastern. orange, white and green fly- Narragansett. appreciate the response admin.. youre a great alta skieur, nothing shy. as far as powder skiing goes, i wouldnt know lately anyway but seem to remember the over-the-head shots the best- by far. 4 inches of fresh can provide a “powder” day, for teton skieurs. checkpoint alpha, beta, gamma 10:00 over

  6. nuge says:

10:55 eastern. orange, white and green fly- Narragansett. so it was admin.. so it was. and as another winter landscaped slithers into obscurity we reflect and pull out the golf clubs. one thing i will not argue with is that teton pines is a beautiful golf course. hopefully you will deliver pictures fromt that course to the site admin.? checkpoint alpha, beta gamma 10:00 over

  7. nuge says:

10:23 eastern. orange, white and green fly- Narragansett. it’s good to be loved admin.. good to be loved indeed. appears mother nature has increased her offering. alta still holding snow based on “mountain cams” photos is jhmr? skiied suicide chute, a.k.a. country lane in alta july 1st 2005. turns were epic almost to halfway down lower apron before needing to remove ski and begin hiking to a one jerry larson waiting in the p-dog lot. to my return jerry exclaimed “the streak” but i still dont know why? regardless, the skiing was fun as heck. checkpoint alpha, beta, gamma 10:00 (6/14) over

  8. admin says:

It’s okay here, skied a little off the tram today. Everthing is smooth with good potential of high long tours from the tram northward. were supposed to get a few inches over the next few days, with east side of the winds expecting feet.

  9. nuge says:

11:23 eastern. hope and anchor fly- Providence. is that right admin.? winds catching feet? it is northern wyoming, where june is fair game for winter storms. wish i could ski it instead of sit here. gotta get a new gig. checkpoint alpha, beta, gamma 10:00 over

  10. nuge says:

14:06 eastern. orange, white and green fly- Providence. so winter ’09-’10 comes to a close and all i have to show for it is 2 days at stowe and three at the loaf. did get to check out little feet and the lead guy from the spin doctors at the loaf but the terrain there is much flatter than at stowe. not really sure golf can provide the same relief from reality as skiing but ill take my chances. just for the record golf cannot replace skiing. sex with esther is about the only thing. too bad she’s married. checkpoint alpha, beta, gamma 10:00 over

  11. nuge says:

9:36 eastern. hope and anchor fly- Providence. thanx for editing the last post, if that’s what you did, admin.. seem to remember including a less than acceptable word in it but am glad it was erased. maybe she’s not a you know what anyway. want to let you know that “blogging” on your web-site is important to me. feels like im communicating with a higher power, dont know, maybe youre it. no one can deny the that the stars in Wyoming are brighter and more abundant than those in Rhode Island. if i didnt hate flying id hop on a plane and get there. checkpoint alpha, beta, gamma 10:00 over.

  12. admin says:

Looking out for the greater good of man kind one comment at time. It’s back on again around here, 3-7 tonight, 1-3 thurs, with wind, you know what that means…the creamy d-lux.

  13. nuge says:

11:09 eastern. hope and anchor fly- Providence. creamy-d you say admin.? creamy d it is, was and ever shall be. do have time for vacation and very very tempted to ski Wyoming this year but hate flying. if i can get 2 weeks off ill drive. thanks again for erasing that comment. you know me? a little excessively emotional at times so partying. furthermore, know this other girl who may be getting short end of stick but she lives in miami so what’s the point? miss skiing alta so much. checkpoint alpha, beta gamma 10:00 over

  14. Jon says:

Season done. Blew my knee out, at least I got that one more day in at the ghee before I had to call it quits. Any bloggers that what to see more great powder shots of Mike Calla and friends should send money to Jon Lewis P.O. Box 1942 Wilson, WY 83014 so that I may continue to live the dream. Im sure its tax deductable. Thought I might give it a try Mike. checkpoint alpha, beta gamma out….

  15. Alex Calla says:

I hope all that snow clears for my visit in August beacuse I wont be hip dragging or carving anything.

  16. admin says:

More like frozen boilerplate, no new snow last night with 15 deg temps and 50mph winds, have to wait for the sun to come out and soften. Not much snow in August around here, although we’ll see a little when we get to the summit of the Midde Teton little sis. Jon sorry to hear that, hope it didn’t go down the way a little birdie told me it did. Oh well, you’ll be back for next ski season so rehab your ass off.

  17. nuge says:

10:51 eastern. hope and anchor fly- Providence. that’s right admin.. doses. sorry to hear the news Jon. am thus far unclear how your knee relates to the admissibility of bootedandfed.com but appreciate the attempt. furthermore the weather in rhody island is clear, hot and humid. time to hit the beach!!!!!!!!!! checkpoint alpha, beta, gamm 10:00 (6/22) over

  18. nuge says:

11:25 eastern. hope and anchor fly- Providence. another day another dollar admin.. just found out this miami girl “bella sol” was cheating on me with a guy who stole all her family jewels and a bunch of other stuff while she was away on vacation. it’s a good thing he did otherwise i wouldnt have known what was happening. i think they might have a substance abuse problem or 2. time to move on. wanted: girl, under 30 yrs, attractive & not living in miami. checkpoint alpha, beta, gamma 10:00 over

  19. admin says:

Well Nuge, sometimes you eat the bar, and a sometimes the bar, well, it eats you.

  20. nuge says:

9:41 eastern. hope and anchor fly- Providence. “i like your style dude” and yours too admin.. hazy, hot and humid here in rhode island. great beach day but wouldnt you know it, im working? appears this summer has the potential to be the summer of nuge. have been religiously re-habbing my leg and it’s starting to possess pre-avalanche strength. dream of returning to the big mountain arena in order to safely out- race an avalanche. that last one to get the better of me likely didnt expect my return and if i see that snub-faced streaker again ill pacify it. checkpoint alpha, beta, gamma 10:00 over

  21. nuge says:

10:01 eastern. hope and anchor fly- Providence. that’s right admin., pacify. BEST PHISH CONCERT EVER last night at comcast. hip-hip, hooray! dirt into sample in a jar= highly preferable. possum into divided sky- even better. YESSS new Gordon song ripped. trey thanked the audience for our appreciation and told us we were assholes all at once. a very coherent depiction of us new englanders. right on! checkpoint alpha, beta, gamma 10:00 over

  22. Jon Lewis says:

What did you guys ski on Moran? Sickle? CMC? I sat home stewing about not being able for gentlemen starts of 2am, a boat ride across jackson lake and all the other great moments that make up ski mountaineering. The only relief I had was doing keg stands and some dirty girl. Well I picked up an old road bike and can be seen riding between driggs and victor every night. I try telling myself riding on the road is like skining but its not. Owell the leg is greating strong and it time to hit some waves on the surf board. Going to Widespread?

  23. nuge says:

9:55 eastern. colors fly- Providence. so it was admin.. so it was. as far as yesterday’s (6/22/10) post goes let me begin by apologizing for improperly utilizing the english language to explain my thoughts on http://www.bootedandfed.com‘s “comments” page. secondly, it is important for me to mention how an older girl accompanied me to the 6/22/10 comcast ctr. (mansfield, mass.) phish show resulting in my tired approach to bootedandfed.com yesterday. ultimately phish’s 6/22/10 comcast ctr. show delivered entertainment pure leaving me incredibly grateful. lady gaga. checkpoint alpha, beta, gamma 10:00 over

  24. admin says:

Wow, possum into divided sky, great jam, wish I was there. We’ll have to catch a show together one of these days. Good to hear the leg is back to “protocol” days, the big mountain arena is waiting. Jon, we got turned around on the skillet due to some sloughs at 6 a.m, then it turned cloudy and cool, perfect conditions for skiing, oh well, Mt Moran isn’t going anywhere. Road biking is nothing like skiing, it sucks. Unless you enjoy large trucks, and bad drivers in close proximity to you moving at 70mph. Get an MRI, get the surgery, and get on with it.
